Greece's flagship red comes from the high basin of Nemea in the Peloponnese, where the single grape Agiorgitiko takes the shape its altitude dictates. From the warm valley floor come soft, plummy, everyday reds; from cool slopes near 900 metres come deep, structured wines built to age — and the finest cuvées blend the two.

The vine has grown here since antiquity, entwined with the legend of Heracles and the Nemean lion, and locals still call the wine "the blood of Heracles". Deeply coloured, gently tannic and generous with fruit, modern Nemea is the friendly, food-loving standard-bearer of the Greek red revival.
